Severe Weather Policy

Prepared by: Center Point AYSO 1468 Board

Safety of our children, volunteers, parents/guardians, and fans is extremely important to the Center Point AYSO 1468 Board. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to make decisions for their soccer players and families as they see fit, for any weather condition.

To help facilitate standard practices for our region the following weather policy shall be in place for severe weather events. This includes but is not limited to, High Heat, Extreme Wind, Lightning, Rain, and Snow. In most cases of moderate or seasonal weather events, games and/or practices will be held as normally scheduled at the discretion of our volunteer coaches.

Severe Weather Types

Tornado: If there is a current Tornado Watch precaution should be taken in monitoring local weather for storm development. A watch is often issued well in advance of any severe weather. If there is a current Tornado Warning for Center Point/Linn County all games and practices should be cancelled, and a shelter should be sought immediately.

Thunderstorm: If there is a predicted or anticipated thunderstorms but no watches or warnings have been issued for Center Point/Linn County then precaution should be taken, and local weather information should be monitored. Practice/Games may continue with no adjustments if there is no lightning in the area. Lightning within a 10-mile radius would warrant a postponement, delay, or cancelation of all practices and games. If there is a current Thunderstorm Watch in our area, precaution should be taken to monitor developing weather. If no lightning is within 10 miles, games/practices may continue. If there is a current Thunderstorm Warning in our area all games/practices should be cancelled, and shelter sought immediately.

High Winds: Please use caution with windy conditions, improperly secured goals can cause damage, injury, or worse. It is up to the coach’s discretion to hold a practice in windy conditions. Games on windy days will not be cancelled unless extreme winds are in the area. In a windy situation where the wind is in the direction of a goal during a game it is suggested that teams switch ends of the field each quarter. If there is a wind advisory or wind warning, typically issued for sustained winds of 40 mph or more, in effect for our area additional guidance may be given by the board, which includes cancellation of games or practices, but is at the discretion of the coach.

High Temperature and Low Temperature: Soccer can and will be played in a wide range of temperatures. The following guidelines shall be used when certain temperatures are reached, low or high, or if there are heat advisories or freeze warnings in place for our area. Along with the below temperature chart if there are heat indexes or wind chills in place that indicate the temperature feels above or below a certain range, then higher/lower range shall be followed for the given situation.
